I do a fair bit of international travel, and so would the metal detector. Regarding ancients in the States:

a.) Those pre-dating colonials buried some curious items.

b.) Colonials buried some curious items.

c.) Depression-era folk buried some curious items.

d.) Rare instances of ancients being stumbled upon within the states have been discovered: The coincidence of coins: Ancients unburied in the states

Not common, no, but still possible; most likely lost from a private collection.
