What kind of spider is that? We get huge ones like that, too, and I have no idea what type they are (well, I've seen two in four years….).

I believe that's a garden variety spider… that is, it's commonly known as a Garden Spider. ("Argiope_aurantia", if you dig Latin.)
I only know this because I found one at my house a month ago when I was unhooking the garden hose for winter.
